After over a decade of practice, I have learned that any lawyer is capable of learning and understanding the law; but not all are capable of connecting with a client sufficiently to understand that person’s predicament in all its complexity. And that even if you managed to know the law and connect with your client if you have not taken the time to “prepare” that client for his case, the case can unravel quickly often with disastrous consequences.
Over the years, I have made client preparation a cornerstone of my practice and success. It is a principle I hammer into my associates and my paralegals. When our clients walk into the Immigration Court or an interview room with the immigration service, they understand what is happening, they understand what is needed in order for us to be successful and they understand their own role in our overall legal strategy. “A well prepared client has two advocates during his hearing, his lawyer and himself”. A well prepared client can adapt to a change of circumstances (i.e. unexpected questions) whether in the court room or interview room.
